How to remove PFAS “Forever Chemicals” from your water

You have probably seen lots in the news lately about “PFAS,” also known as Forever Chemicals, contaminating Australia’s water supply.

So, what are PFAS, and how can you remove them from your drinking water to protect you and your family against the dangerous health risks they pose?

Water2water has been helping customers enjoy safe drinking water for over 25 years and we’re here to help you understand PFAS and explain how you can easily remove “Forever Chemicals” with a water filtration system.

What are PFAS and why are they called “forever chemicals?”

PFAS is the name given to a group of synthetic, man-made chemicals that have been used for decades in everyday products like waterproof clothing, non-stick pans and firefighting foam.

PFAS stands for per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances, and they are known as “forever chemicals,” because they do not break down easily in the environment and contaminate the air, soil and water supplies for years and years.

Key sources of PFAS contamination

  • Industrial manufacturers who use PFAS in the products they make
  • Landfill sites and water treatment plants that process materials containing PFAS
  • Firefighting form used to put out the increasing number of bushfires in Australia

Over time, PFAS enter water supplies through industrial and firefighting run-offs and from the breakdown of products containing PFAS.

Why are PFAS in drinking water dangerous?

Long-term exposure to PFAS has been linked to several serious illnesses including: –

  • Liver and Kidney damage
  • Increased risk of cancer (particularly kidney and testicular cancers)
  • Damage to our immune system
  • Hormonal imbalances

Following more evidence and research becoming available, the government and national health authorities are responding to the need to protect public health.

Australia’s National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) is proposing new guidelines to lower the acceptable level of PFAS in drinking water supplies which will be reflected in Australian Drinking Water Standards guidelines.

How to remove PFAS from your drinking water

The good news is you can easily remove PFAS from your drinking water by installing a water filtration system.

At Water2water, we have done our own research and found that installing a Reverse Osmosis water filter system is the best and most cost-effective way to remove PFAS from the water you drink.

A twin filtration system like W2W Twin Under Sink System with Copper Reduction is a good budget option and will help reduce the amount of PFAS in your tap water.

However, a reverse osmosis filter system provides the best protection and removes up to 99% of PFAS and other forever chemicals.

Reverse Osmosis (RO) uses a semi-permeable membrane to filter out molecular contaminants like PFAS and other forever chemicals.

Our W2W 4-Stage Reverse Osmosis Filter System includes powerful pre and post-RO sediment and carbon filters to remove up to 99% of ALL contaminants, including calcium, heavy metals, viruses, pesticides and PFAS forever chemicals.

The mains fed filtration system connects to the water supply under the sink and stores purified water in a 4-gallon pressurised tank, ready for you to drink from the sink top faucet included with the Water2water system.

We recommend using a plumber or water filtration technician to professionally install reverse osmosis systems to avoid possible leaks and protect your plumbing system.
